Build Your Future Gearing Up for Careers in Construction Month

    For Immediate Release
    8.13.13

Alachua, Fla. – The Build Your Future (BYF) initiative is going all out to help recruit the next generation of construction professionals. As October’s Careers in Construction Month quickly approaches, BYF has been actively engaging students to promote the rewarding and high-demand careers available in the industry.

Last week, BYF was in Millen, Ga. to highlight Robins & Morton (R&M) and its client CARBO Ceramics’ extraordinary community involvement and support of education in the local area. At a recent “Back to School” event, R&M, CARBO and BYF donated over 1,000 backpacks to Jenkins County Elementary and Middle school students. NCCER also donated textbooks, teacher resources and various educational tools to the school staff.

R&M is currently building the CARBO Ceramics plant in Millen, but is also actively involved in promoting education and partnerships in the local community. Southeastern Technical College in nearby Vidalia, Ga. recently became an NCCER Accredited Training and Education Facility (ATEF) under the sponsorship of R&M. Now, Southeastern Tech and Millen High School have partnered with the goal of improving the public school’s welding program.

“Robins & Morton knows what is important in all the communities where we work: education, employment opportunities and the growth of the local economy,” said Mittie Cannon, director of workforce development for Robins & Morton’s Power and Industrial Division. “The people of Jenkins County have welcomed us and we wanted to give back to the community. At that same time, we are proud of the opportunities that construction offers for people and look at this as an opportunity to tell people about what we do (and hopefully continue to develop our future workforce).”

BYF provides a number of online resources for organizations interested in getting involved in Careers in Construction Month at byf.org/resources, including a best practices guide, craft profession posters, flyers and brochures. Organizations can also request that their state governor’s officially proclaim October as Careers in Construction Month using BYF’s Sample Proclamation and comprehensive State Proclamation Guidelines to find out who to contact in their states. Participants can also register events on BYF’s website, where they are profiled as an official part of Careers in Construction Month for added publicity.
