National Center for Construction Education & Research
Alachua, Fla.—Crane and equipment simulators, welding demonstrations, perspective employers, and NASCAR--it doesn’t get any better than that! Over 500 students from school Regions 10 and 11 in North Texas got just that.
On November 2nd NCCER’s Build Your Future (BYF) campaign teamed up with the Construction Education Foundation of North Texas, North Lake College and TEXO to hold a Construction Career Day event highlighting National Careers in Construction Week. This inaugural event brought over 900 people together all focused on narrowing the skills gap of America’s youth by bringing the construction industry and education together.
Mark Nyquist, Chairman and CEO of DynaTen Corporation stated, ―The event had just the right mix of excitement, information and activity to engage the students and prompt them to consider their opportunities in the construction industry. The students were very enthusiastic and engaged the various contractors with questions as the contractors demonstrated various aspects of their businesses. The students left with a much better understanding of the sophistication and planning that’s required in building construction today and learned how they might enter and develop their own careers in the construction industry.
Representatives from both Region 10 and 11 were equally as impressed. "What a wonderful learning opportunity the day was for not only students and teachers, but also our industry sponsors as well! This day opened up the door for so many new partnerships in our Region 10 and 11 areas," commented Kay Irlas, Region 10 CTE Consultant. Dan Belcher of Region 11 continued, ―I have been involved in Career and Technical Education for over 20 years and have been to numerous career day events across Texas and the nation. Construction Career Day was by far the best run and organized event I have ever been a part of or involved in. I cannot wait to see how big we can go NEXT year, because everything is bigger in Texas!‖
The icing on the cake was the opportunity for the students to speak with and get autographs from David Starr, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver #81.
