How Do We Revitalize Our Work-Based Learning Platforms?
Restoring the Dignity of Work – Recommendation #2: Revitalize Our Work-Based Learning Programs
How do we connect education to experience? One of the best ways is through work-based learning.
Work-based learning refers to learning and practicing technical and employability skills by working in a real work environment. Work-based learning programs can take many forms and can be highly effective by focusing education through practical application. This style of training is particularly relevant to trades industries like construction, where hands-on work is predominant.
Despite the potential benefits for students, educators and employers, the adoption of and participation in work-based learning programs has been inconsistent. Simplifying, incentivizing, expanding and recognizing these programs can help to overcome common challenges and support wider implementation.
NCCER makes the following workforce development policy recommendation in its 2026 report, Restoring the Dignity of Work:
- Revitalize Our Work-Based Learning Programs: Significantly improve participation in work-based learning programs by removing barriers to company participation.
