NCCER in the News: Youth Today – We taught students to love hands-on learning. Let’s help them continue to embrace it once they leave the classroom.

NCCER Director of Philanthropy and Partnerships Melissa Perkins recently wrote an op-ed for Youth Today. In the piece, Perkins highlights how the recent shift toward hands-on, project-based learning in schools has not likewise been followed by a change in the types of careers and postsecondary education pathways students are typically pushed toward.

“Construction is too often framed as a fallback, when in reality a job in the construction industry can give any student a career that matches how they’ve been learning for years, including the high-achieving student who loves building and problem-solving but is told college is the “right” path. We need to stop focusing on an outdated perception and look at the reality of opportunities.”
