A State of Opportunity: North Carolina’s Approach to Construction Workforce Development [NCCER Case Study]
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is utilizing NCCER to expand construction skill development in high schools throughout the state, helping support the needs of local industry and providing valuable career paths for students.
With a growing industrial labor shortage and skills gap in North Carolina, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) identified the need to infuse the state’s education system with technical skills development.
Utilizing NCCER’s craft curricula, credentialing and other resources, NCDPI has systematically integrated construction education into more than 200 high school programs throughout North Carolina, resulting in hundreds of thousands of unique industry credentials being earned by students annually.
Along with helping to meet the needs of the state’s industry, NCDPI and NCCER are also opening doors for students to construction careers that are high paying, in high demand and can support their future success. Nolan Fahrer, NCDPI’s Trade Education Consultant and state NCCER director, explains:
“Students are seeing the value in the trades again. They’re starting to see these as viable careers, and that is starting to help build the career pipeline.”
