NCCER In the News: Community College Daily – Framing the ‘One Door’ concept

NCCER was recently mentioned in an article by Community College Daily that featured how Germanna Community College in Virginia has aligned its workforce-focused programs to be equitable with traditional credit programs.

One of our most unique innovations is how we’ve built “crosswalks” between our NCCER skilled trade tracks — HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, construction craft technician, heavy equipment operator, industrial electrician and welding — and our associate of applied science in technical studies. If a student completes their OSHA 10, NCCER Core and all four levels of their NCCER trade credential, we crosswalk those credentials into credit classes. We can sit with a student and say, “Hey, you’re almost there. You just need a few more classes — entrepreneurship, basic technical math, interpersonal dynamics, computer business applications, technical-professional writing and a few more credit classes — and you’ll have a technical studies associate degree.”

This is transformative. It gives students a path to continue their education, allowing them to start as a technician and possibly even become a small business owner. In an AI-impacted world, these hands-on skilled trades are going to pave the path and the ability for a student to own and grow their own business is limitless.
