Breaking Ground on the Next Generation: How AGC Maine Is Building Its State’s Future Construction Workforce [NCCER Case Study]
AGC Maine has built an engaging model for nurturing awareness and interest in careers in construction with community involvement.
Construction needs more young people. To inspire the next generation, the Associated General Contractors of Maine have worked with local employers and education groups to establish the Maine Construction Academy.
This 20-day pre-apprenticeship program gives students “behind-the-fence” exposure to the construction industry. They learn basic construction skills, get to visit and work on real job sites and interview with contractors. This in-depth look at a career in construction has seen to high student engagement, with more than 400 NCCER Core credentials earned by participants since 2024.
The academy currently has 35 partnering employers and 19 high school and community college programs involved, with more joining frequently. The opportunity to build awareness of these careers while training, recruiting and hiring young talent has been a significant boost to local industry.
